Is that the most beautiful pastry you’ve ever seen, or what? My friend Amber and I went to Les Madeleines in Salt Lake City for breakfast yesterday (I deemed the restaurant a must-see for my trip after seeing it on Best Thing I Ever Ate), and I feasted on this flaky goodness. It was oh-so-good, though super duper rich (sorry, pals; I didn’t make it to two). It also had a sweet honey taste to it, which was a nice surprise. Actually, now that I think of it, it reminded me of these little elephant ear cookies my mom used to get at a coffee shop when I was little. Only this is like the croissant version. So it’s nostalgic tastes wrapped up in lovely new package. No wonder I loved it.
Are you hungry yet? It really is that flaky and gorgeous. Snapping a pretty photo of food can be tricky sometimes, but the Kouing-aman was a pro. Seriously, Tyra Banks would be so proud.
Amber ordered the mushroom bread pudding, which was also quite a looker (and mighty tasty, too).
So I highly recommend Les Madeleines and the Kouing-aman next time you’re in Salt Lake. The whole patisserie is adorable, with lots of greens and browns, polka dots and flowers. And they serve lunch, too, which looks equally delicious. Amber and I were inches away from ordering their pommes frites after our breakfast. There’s another good reason to go back!
Have you discovered any foodie gems in your recent travels? Or maybe something absolutely amazing in your own neck of the woods? Keep your eyes peeled! Sometimes the best things show up where you least expect them.
