Let’s get this ball rolling

November 14, 2010 By Katrina

Jared and I were browsing through the holiday aisles at Target the other day and came across this gem of a decorative item. It’s a little gray porcelain ball, about the size of a navel orange, and it’s rocking my favorite wintertime motif. Yep, I’ve got a thing for snowflakes (everything looks prettier with a little snow, don’t you think?), and though we weren’t quite ready to start the Christmas décor shopping, we couldn’t pass this up. There was only one gray snowflake ball left in the entire store (we’ll be scouting nearby Targets for a few more), and I have absolutely no idea what I’ll do with it. But I love it, and it’s officially the thematic inspiration for my impending holiday decorating extravaganza. Snow. Gotta love it.

So now that I have the gray snowball for inspiration, I think it’s time to get this holiday decorating rolling. I’m going for winter wonderland-esque this year (an old-as-time theme for sure, but you really can’t go wrong with snowflakes and sparkles). And that brings me to my question of the day: When it comes to holiday decorating, how early is too early to get started? I know a lot of people go by the not-until-after-Thanksgiving or after-December-1 rules, but I’m a little less patient (and a lot less self-disciplined) when it comes to Christmas versus Halloween. Here’s my brief rationale for putting up the trees and ornaments before the turkey and cranberry sauce:

• This is my favorite, favorite time of year, and I want it to feel that way inside and out.
• Nothing is prettier than a house decked in twinkle lights, so why not enjoy the prettiness as much as possible?
• The holiday season goes by way too fast; this is my way of stretching it out a bit longer.

Don’t worry; I won’t go full-on holiday blogging until later in the season when everyone else has caught the decorating bug. Until then, I’ll be waiting by the twinkle lights. ‘Tis the season, you know.

So when do you start pulling out the holiday decorations? Are you going with a certain theme or interesting color combos this year? Any new favorite items that you can’t wait to put up? Can’t wait to hear about it!

XO,
Katrina

I will be decorating for Christmas when I return home from Thanksgiving with the fam. I just put up my cheery, colorful tree and call it a day, but love seeing others houses decked out to the max.

For your new found christmas decoration ball, I think if you found a collection they would be gorgeous in a large apothecary jar…you could add in white and silver ball ornaments to give it a mix if you didn’t have enough to fill one with the new decoration. I love apothecary jars!

I love apothecary jars, too! Great idea! Ornaments are so great for filling up jars and bowls — tons o’ sparkle! Your tree sounds adorable. Any touch of Christmas cheer is beautiful in my book! 🙂
