Cleary I’m a sucker for anything holiday related, and just about any item with reindeer, snowflakes or glitter garners an automatic dose of love from me. But when it comes to my favorite things, I’m trying to be a bit more discerning by reserving the title for items that are super duper deserving. So it’s not enough just to strike my fancy; favorite things are habit-changers or moment-makers (and smile-starters, always).
Case in point: the return of the Starbucks holiday cup. Believe it or not, there’s more to this favorite thing than the innate holly jolliness of a festive paper product. For me, the return of the red holiday cups at Starbucks is like the ultimate moment of legitimization for my premature holiday cheer. I spend a solid couple months celebrating in secret (OK, not so secret). And while I’m wiling away the first month of fall rocking to my Christmas jams and donning my snowflake necklace, the rest of the world is busy back-to-schooling and prepping for Halloween. But on Nov. 1 (that’s when the cups make their comeback in Columbia; maybe it’s sooner for other lucky ducks out there), snowy scenes appear on the storefront, and my cup of coffee comes steeped with a holiday greeting. Best. Day. Ever.
And just to keep things exciting, the cups do a little change-up year after year (though I do think the red is a must). This year they have a snazzy little snowman on the side, along with a happy holiday quip that varies from cup to cup. Today my cup reads: “When I give gifts, I always get more in return. Funny, isn’t it?” Yes, cup, that’s funny indeed. ‘Tis the season for such generosity and enlightenment.
So how about you guys? Do you get a warm dose of holiday cheer when the red cups return? Or is there another mark of the season’s beginning that you look forward to each year? What does it take for something to be a favorite on your list?
XO,
Katrina

I went to Starbucks tonight to get a grande soy Chai latte, and they double cupped my drink. Score! My first cup has an owl on it and the quote, “I talked to a stranger once for an hour over coffee. We’re not strangers any longer.” My other cup has a girl in a scarf staring at snowflakes. She says, “My sister and I would just stare up at the sky, trying to see where the snowflakes were born.”

Double cupped?!? Awesome! And two super great quotes for sure. Don’t they make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? Starbucks knows its stuff.
