Yesterday, Jared brought home lunch from Hoss’s Market & Rotisserrie, one of our fave little sandwich joints in town (they really sell a lot more than sandwiches, but I discovered a mega-delicious BLT there a few years ago and have yet to order anything else). Along with our regular order, which almost always consists of the BLT for me and a Carolina-style pulled pork sandwich for Jared, the hubs decided to spring for a single chocolate truffle — a candy cane chocolate truffle, to be exact — just because he thought I needed it. Aw, shucks.
In our entire history of coupledom, Jared and I have never been candy-giftin’ folks. That’s partly because we’re not big candy-eaters (and probably also because we almost always have a mountain o’ baked goods at home that we’re slowly eating away). So the whole candy-for-Valentine’s-Day and chocolate-for-anniversaries has never been our style. To be honest, I never really got it. Until, that is, this adorable candy cane truffle walked into my life.
Here’s my new conclusion when it comes to gifts of chocolate: Less is more, and one makes all the difference. There was just something about that single truffle, picked out from among all its truffle-y cohorts, that absolutely made my day. It gave me an excuse to drink another cup of coffee (because what is chocolate without coffee?). It sparked a rousing conversation about the merits of candy-gifting and our newfound appreciation for chocolate (very deep convos going on at our place). And to top it all off, the candy cane flavoring made me feel like Christmas, which is always a win in my book.
It probably didn’t hurt that this truffle tasted like a heavenly dome of chocolaty goodness either. It was made by Le Grand Confectionary, a fancy pants chocolate shop in Sacramento (if you’re looking for some eye candy, click here for Le Grand’s list of truffle flavors. Jared’s virtual choices were espresso and raspberry; I went for espresso and mint). They sell them by the box, but you really only need one. Then again, special ordering a single truffle all the way from California might be a little excessive. Hmm. On second thought, go for the box. It shouldn’t be too hard to find some pals to share with.
So what’s your take on chocolate? Are you a less-is-more kind of person or a the-more-the-better type? Do you have any favorites that you spring for on special occasions? And while we’re on the subject of chocolate, do you have a favorite recipe that uses chocolate in a creative way?
XO,
Katrina

Thanks, Zab! I don’t have the chocolatier skills to make this kind of truffle, but I definitely enjoyed eating it! Ella says, “Ruff.”
