Fall on Walden Pond is pretty much magical.
We made the 20-minute trek to Walden Pond this weekend as a quick getaway to see the changing leaves, but we were more than pleasantly surprised by what we found. The weather was perfect — crisp without being cold — and the pond sparkled in the sunshine. “Mermaids, Mommy!” Beany squealed as soon as the water came into view. “Mermaids live here! That’s why it’s so sparkly!” She was certain. And I’m certain that if I were a mermaid, I’d like to live there, too.
There’s a reason Thoreau was so fond of Walden Pond, and as much as it can be a touristy destination now for folks visiting Boston, it really has stayed a serene, beautiful little pocket outside the city. We thought we’d be there for half an hour and ended up staying most of the afternoon. For all the gizmos and gadgets our kids have to play with, it’s amazing how happy they are with rocks to throw and water to splash in. Add the excitement of a possible mermaid sighting, and they were pretty much over the moon.
“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads,” Thoreau wrote of this place. Life really can be so good.

Nice entry, I’ve not been but it looks like a great spot. Thoreau’s book has a nice ‘sequel’ of sorts in Henry Beston’s The Outermost House set on Cape Cod in the late 1920s. I actually liked that a little more; give it a whirl although you’ve probably heard of it. Similar premise.

I haven’t read that one, but I’ll definitely check it out! Thanks for the recommendation!
