Wonderfully slow, sleepy Saturdays. These are what dreams are made of. At least the dreams of sleep-deprived parents who do too much go, go, go and not enough stop and smell the pancakes. But today is a good day. It’s a slow-to-start, breakfast-at-10, happy-kids-and-so-much-sunshine kind of Saturday. And our hearts and tummies are very full.
Holiday Baking: Make-Ahead Cherry Scones
Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by Shutterfly. All ideas and opinions are my own. Scones, you guys. Scones. The holiday season is here, my to-do list is a million miles long, and I’m over here making scones like they’re going out of style. They’re not, of course, because scones are delicious and will never be…
Worth the Effort: Pain Aux Raisins
We’ve been told time and again that hard work is worth the effort, but here’s the real deal: Some things aren’t always worth the effort. Wrangling two kids into coats and hats to traipse through a foot of snow to go buy diapers when Amazon two-day shipping is just so free? Not worth it. Getting…
Fit for a Fairy: Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins
Beany has been increasingly interested in ingredients lately, and her questioning is often relentless. “What is that?” “Where did that come from?” “What does that taste like?” “How did you make it?” This has its plusses and minuses, of course. Curiosity finally convinced her to taste salad dressing, which made her taste spinach salad, which…
Dessert Fix: 20-Minute Apple Turnovers
Some days are just ho hum, and you need a pick-me-up to turn things around. That, my friends, is when you must head to the kitchen. No, I’m not encouraging you to eat your feelings (though a once-in-a-while ice-cream binge never really hurt anyone, right?). But I am encouraging you to pour those feelings into…
Don’t get hangry: How to build the perfect breakfast tacos
I’m happy to report that we’ve made it through our first real Boston blizzard. There’s still so much snow outside (and it’s snowing right now), but aside from the bunches of snow, it was pretty uneventful. Wonderfully uneventful, actually. We certainly prepared for the blizzard like any normal people would: filled up extra bottles of water, made sure…
Sundays and sunshine: Lemon donut muffins
I always forget how much I love spring until it comes back again. The weather here has been amazing lately, and we’ve been soaking up some serious outside time (hence my frequent sneezes and ridiculously itchy eyes. Oh, allergies, you rascals!). I’m convinced that few things are better for a kid — particularly a high-energy…
Eat like a monkey: Ginger(monkey)bread
The first time I ate monkey bread was for breakfast at a school friend’s sleepover when I was 12 years old. I remember watching, fascinated, as her mom cut Pillsbury Grands biscuits into six pieces each, rolled the dough into balls and then dunked them into a bath of butter and cinnamon sugar before layering…
Fall in New England: Apples, waffles and a hooray for new seasons
I’m sitting here at my desk with a 50-degree breeze coming through the window and feeling almost too chilly to be comfortable. It’s wonderful! It seems fall comes much earlier in New England, and I’m so, so happy for it. This transition to Boston has been tougher on me than I expected. It’s busy. It’s…
Of markets and merriment: Vintage breakfast puffs
On Saturday morning, we rounded up the gang and headed to the Durham Farmers Market to pick up some fresh produce and enjoy some fresh air. It really was a perfect morning weather-wise: a breezy low 60s with plenty of sunshine. Beany loves to be outside, and we were all do for dose of open…
